“Substitutability and concreteness are two radically opposed modes of living. The second, in every sense of the word, is the natural condition. This means that naturally, in nature, everything is concrete, given and not substitutable. It exists at a particular time and place, and fills its mission and destiny in so far as it is there, whether as a non-living object, a plant or an animal, or a human being. There are no two things that are completely identical in the world, not even two tree leaves or two snowflakes. Any substitution assumes an intellectual operation, a kind of abstraction from one or other aspects of two objects, so that they could be made comparable, and thus substitutable.

Substitution, as a principle, is therefore a further ruse of those who are in the know; who have the mental powers of rendering, first in thinking, and then in actual reality, through various techniques, of which agriculture and then metallurgy are the basic models, various objects all but identical, thus interchangeable. Such interchangeability is helped by the characteristics of words and images, as the same word or image can certainly stand for, or represent, different concrete bodies. Substitutability is thus the precondition of exchange, but it can also lead to the construction of new bodies by the combination of various words and images. Such combinations further undermine the sense of reality, rendering people living in their concrete situations confused and powerless, and assign further power to those capable for such technical manipulations. It is the tricky unreality of substitution that is captured in money: in the fortunate, twice Goethean expression of Jean-Christophe Agnew (1986: 71–72), money is a ‘sorcerer’s apprentice’; it is ‘alchemy and roguery conflated and abstracted’.

The ultimate consequences of the rising force of substitutability concern matters of life and death. Life, most evidently, is not the result of a mental operation, cannot come into being through a substitution, but requires very concrete and generous acts. Similarly, anything concrete that dies is irreplaceable in its concreteness – even if death happens, being part of nature. The question concerns the way the new logic of substitutability would eventually interfere with such basic natural processes. It is here that we return to the debt–guilt culture to which the body is an obstacle to be destroyed, and rituals of sacrifice.”
