If I'm not mistaken, almost every normal house has windows on all four sides. The "opaque or reflective surface" is called a "blind" or "shutter". 😏
There is of course something to be said for technical solutions. For example, the low-energy Passivhaus standard is very conscious of glazing area, and something called the solar heat gain coefficient, which can be modified by special coatings on the windows so you get less heat for the same amount of natural light. It works by filtering infrared and UV.
Oftentimes it's not necessary to rely on high-tech materials. Humans studied the movement of the sun for thousands of years. Just plan your house and shading accordingly.

That's literally the worst way to design a living space conceivable. You come home from work and your entire building is overheated. Houseplants will often die because of heat damage OR because of insufficient light because you have to keep the blinds closed so your house doesn't turn into the palace at Arrakeen if you catch my drift.
Le Corbusier took a massive L with his first retarded designs, then doubled down on "we modernists know what we are doing" and fucked everyone over in the process. Enjoy your sauna (living room).
