They say they have identified a gene that could obstruct the development of deeper, thicker roots in upland rice, characteristics that are crucial for drought resistance.
By removing this gene, called HMGB1, irrigated rice developed longer roots and greater drought tolerance, traits similar to those of upland rice, enabling it to thrive in water-scarce environments, according to their paper.
Will they start selling genetically modified rice?
There might be a beneficial purpose for that chemical to be there otherwise it might have been completely weeded out by natural selection or thousands of years of artificial selection by farmers if the chemical is completely harmful to rice's ability to survive long enough to reproduce
Food could potentially become unsafe because a chemical is removed
Some of the other chemicals might become harmful if there is not another chemical to prevent them from being harmful
Why don't people see the solid object the person is using to prop themselves up so they look like they are levitating in other cases

It's baffling how often we overlook the importance of negative freedoms, such as freedom from poverty and the fear of illness or a lack of financial security in old age. These are tangible, real-world freedoms that directly impact our quality of life.
