"My GF’s family is nice to me and I hate myself for it

My GF’s parents are extremely kind to me, and it feels like something I don’t deserve. As some background, I’ve been steeped in language from my single mom on how men are all trash, and hear that everywhere from too many single Moms. It’s rarely even questioned. Whenever I feel attracted to my GF, it feels like it’s proving that language right. It feels like I’m one of those men in those infinite comments about the uselessness of masculinity. I recognize how this may sound, but as a man with low self-esteem, this has been a nearly-impossible to shake feeling.

My GF’s family treats me as a man whose actions are appreciated, and I feel awful accepting any of their praise. They seem to recognize me as an individual, and not as a beast incapable of a non-sexual thought. I find myself dreading the feeling of inadequacy that harries me after we see them. They treat me too good and I hate myself after even a couple of hours of interaction.

I want to accept myself as a man, but over 16 years of medication and treatment from a psychiatrist, I still cannot accept that maybe I’m not dangerous. I have no record of violence since the 8th grade, but I still worry of the day I prove everyone right.

I can’t shake the feeling that I don’t deserve my GF’s family’s praise, and that I deserve nothing. Metaphors comparing individuals like me to different base animals come quickly to mind. I receive love and am far too concerned about when my being a man will disappoint them to enjoy it. It feels like I’m a fraud, because eventually I will be like every. Single. Other. Man. How could I possibly pay back their generosity when feel that I shouldn’t have accepted it in the first place?
