21 years ago I was working at a tech company outside of Boston and they announced over the loud speaker that everyone was to observe a moment of silence. I kept working. My cubicle neighbor started scolding me since he could hear the clicking. Those moments of silence were just to make people feel good about themselves it did not help the victims. I just wanted to get my work done and go home before the traffic got bad. These days, no more moments of silence.
@Engineer @Tfmonkey I agree with Engineer. It also depends on the type of radiation and time of exposure (total dose). The Van Allen belts are composed of charged particles (electrons and protons with few alpha particles) so even a thin foil of a highly conductive metal would have a high cross section to these types of radiation. The types of radiations that are most lethal (slow neutrons and gamma rays) would not be contained by the Earth's magnetic field.

I am sorry honey, but the world does not owe you anything and will not automatically pay you to show everyone how smart you are. I had to change my dream job a few times. It is called growing up and trying to find something interesting to do that is also useful to society.
