one of the reasons we station troops at indefensible little bases deep in indian country is so the locals can attack them and give us an excuse to do something about it
the claim is those small units will deter aggression because if they're attacked it will force a serious response by the US military (the logic being if there is no response, it will have domestic political consequences), but that's obviously not the case. the response is an *option* the pentagon wants to keep on the table in perpetuity
if they're now admitting we're losing soldiers instead of pretending all we've suffered is non-lethal injuries, well, it could indicate they want exercise their option to respond. or maybe someone just has loose lips this time
